Smart
campers always treat their drinking water.
Ways to Filter Your Camping Water
If you have ever taken a drink of untreated lake or river water, you
will not do it again. More than likely, you suffered from symptoms
of stomach infections caused by pathogens such as Giardia that live in
water. Smart campers will always treat
water before drinking it.
There are three common techniques for purifying water when you are
camping.
1. Boil the water.
2. Dissolve iodine tablets in the water.
3. Filter the water.
Personally, I filter my water, it taste better than boiling or adding
iodine.
Boiling and adding iodine will kill the parasites, however, you still
have to drink the dead pathogens, and any other contaminate that may be
in the water. Camping water filters will remove contaminants from
the water, how and what type will depend on the system that you
purchase. Make sure that you read the product's performance data
sheet and that the filter is certified to remove parasites.
A camping water filter, to me is the best option. Iodine treated
water taste like iodine and boiling water for 20 minutes before you can
drink it, isn't fun either, especially when you've just returned from an
ten mile hike and someone knocked over the water supply.
